Père David's Bull Hunting in Texas

Few exotic deer are as unusual or fascinating as the Père David's deer. With their distinctive branching antlers, long tails, powerful bodies, and remarkable history, these animals offer a trophy hunting opportunity unlike almost anything else in Texas.

At BarBell Ranch in Sweetwater, Texas, we offer professionally guided Père David's bull hunts for hunters seeking an extraordinary trophy in the heart of West Texas.

Native to China and known as the milu, Père David's deer have a story unlike most big-game animals. Once lost from their native wild habitat, the species survived through carefully maintained breeding populations. Today, these remarkable deer are found in managed herds around the world, including exotic hunting ranches in Texas.

For hunters who appreciate distinctive animals, impressive antlers, and the opportunity to pursue something truly different, a mature Père David's bull is an exceptional choice.

Extraordinary Antlers and a Distinctive Trophy

The most recognizable feature of a mature Père David's bull is its unusual antler structure.

Unlike the antlers of whitetail deer, axis bucks, or red stags, Père David's deer develop a distinctive branching pattern, with prominent tines extending backward and outward. The resulting antlers have a dramatic appearance that immediately sets them apart from other trophy deer.

Mature bulls also develop powerful bodies, long faces, broad hooves, and unusually long tails ending in dark tufts. During parts of the year, males may display a shaggy appearance around the neck and shoulders.

Hunters evaluating a trophy bull often consider antler length, branching, mass, and overall maturity.

Another fascinating characteristic is their antler cycle. Père David's deer can occasionally develop two sets of antlers within a single year, making the timing of a hunt particularly important for hunters interested in a mature hard-antler trophy.

A Rare Deer With a Remarkable History

Père David's deer have one of the most extraordinary survival stories in the animal kingdom.

Originally native to China, the species survived for generations in protected imperial herds. By the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the remaining population in China had disappeared.

Fortunately, animals previously brought to Europe survived in managed collections. Those populations helped preserve the species and eventually supported efforts to return Père David's deer to their native country.

The species' history adds another dimension to the hunting experience. Few trophy deer have such unusual physical characteristics combined with such a remarkable background.

For collectors of exotic deer trophies, a mature Père David's bull represents something genuinely distinctive alongside whitetail, axis, fallow, and red stag.

Spot-and-Stalk or Blind Père David's Bull Hunts

At BarBell Ranch, hunters can choose between professionally guided spot-and-stalk hunting and hunting from a blind.

Spot-and-Stalk Père David's Deer Hunting

For hunters who enjoy an active pursuit, spot-and-stalk hunting offers the opportunity to locate a mature Père David's bull and carefully work into position for an ethical shot.

Working alongside your guide, you'll evaluate available animals, assess the wind and surrounding terrain, and plan an approach using the natural cover of the West Texas landscape.

The experience of locating and evaluating these unusual deer adds to the excitement of the hunt, especially for hunters pursuing a bull with impressive antler development.

Hunting Père David's Bulls From a Blind

Hunters who prefer a more stationary approach can pursue Père David's bulls from one of the ranch's hunting blinds.

Blind hunting allows you to observe animal movement and patiently wait for an appropriate shooting opportunity without the physical demands of an active stalk.

Both hunting methods are professionally guided, giving hunters the flexibility to choose an approach that best matches their experience, comfort, and hunting preferences.
