Père David's Cow Hunting in Texas

For hunters looking to bring home a substantial amount of quality wild game meat while experiencing something different from traditional deer hunting, a Père David's cow hunt offers a unique opportunity.

At BarBell Ranch in Sweetwater, Texas, we offer professionally guided Père David's cow hunts for hunters who appreciate the challenge of pursuing an unusual exotic species and the satisfaction of putting quality venison in the freezer.

Native to China and also known as the milu, Père David's deer are unlike the whitetail and other exotic deer most Texas hunters are familiar with. Their distinctive appearance, substantial size, and fascinating history make them an especially interesting animal to pursue.

Whether you're an experienced exotic hunter or looking for a new meat-hunting experience, a Père David's cow hunt at BarBell Ranch combines an enjoyable time in the field with a rewarding harvest.

Exceptional Meat Value From a Large Exotic Deer

One of the biggest attractions of hunting a Père David's cow is the opportunity to bring home a generous amount of wild game meat.

Female Père David's deer are substantial animals, considerably larger than many of the deer species commonly hunted in Texas. Their size makes them appealing to hunters who want to stock the freezer while enjoying a memorable hunting experience.

As a member of the deer family, Père David's deer provide venison that can be prepared in familiar ways. From steaks and roasts to ground meat, burgers, and sausage, a successful harvest offers plenty of opportunities to enjoy the rewards of the hunt.

Unlike a Père David's bull hunt, where impressive antler development is often the primary attraction, our cow hunts focus on meat value and the experience of pursuing these distinctive deer.

For hunters who enjoy bringing home quality wild game and sharing it with family and friends, a Père David's cow can be an excellent addition to the freezer.

A Fascinating and Unusual Deer Species

Père David's deer are among the most distinctive members of the deer family.

These animals are known for their elongated faces, long tails ending in dark tufts, and broad hooves. Their coats typically change with the seasons, ranging from reddish-brown in summer to a grayer appearance during winter.

Although males are famous for their unusual branching antlers, females are naturally antlerless.

The species also has a remarkable history. Père David's deer disappeared from their original wild habitat in China, surviving through carefully maintained populations before eventually being reintroduced to parts of their native range.

Today, these fascinating animals can be found in managed herds around the world, including Texas.

BarBell Ranch's gallery features photographs of Père David's deer living on the property, giving prospective hunters an opportunity to see these unusual animals before planning their trip.

Spot-and-Stalk or Blind Père David's Cow Hunts

At BarBell Ranch, hunters can choose between professionally guided spot-and-stalk hunting and hunting from a blind.

Spot-and-Stalk Père David's Cow Hunting

For hunters who enjoy an active pursuit, spot-and-stalk hunting offers the opportunity to locate a Père David's cow and carefully work into position for an ethical shot.

Working alongside your guide, you'll assess the animal's movements, wind conditions, and available cover before planning an approach.

These deer are alert animals, and successfully getting into position requires patience, careful observation, and good judgment.

The combination of pursuing an unusual exotic species and the opportunity to bring home quality meat makes this a rewarding option for hunters who enjoy being actively involved in the hunt.

Hunting Père David's Cows From a Blind

Hunters who prefer a more stationary approach can pursue Père David's cows from one of the ranch's hunting blinds.

Blind hunting allows you to observe animal movement and wait for a suitable shooting opportunity without the physical demands of an active stalk.

Both hunting methods are professionally guided, allowing hunters to choose the approach that best fits their experience, mobility, and personal preferences.
