Premium Axis Venison for the Freezer
Axis deer, also known as chital, are native to the Indian subcontinent and are easily recognized by their reddish-brown coats covered in white spots. Unlike whitetail deer, axis retain their distinctive spotted appearance throughout adulthood.
While trophy axis bucks are prized for their impressive antlers, axis does are especially appealing to hunters who value exceptional table fare.
Axis venison is known for its mild flavor, tenderness, and lean quality, making it a favorite among wild game enthusiasts. From steaks and roasts to ground venison and sausage, axis meat is versatile in the kitchen and offers a delicious alternative to traditional whitetail venison.
Our two-doe hunting packages give hunters the opportunity to bring home a substantial amount of premium venison while enjoying a memorable hunt in West Texas.

Spot-and-Stalk or Blind Axis Doe Hunts
At BarBell Ranch, hunters can choose between guided spot-and-stalk hunting and hunting from a blind, allowing you to pursue axis does in the style that best suits your preferences.
Spot-and-Stalk Axis Hunting
For hunters who enjoy an active pursuit, spot-and-stalk hunting offers the opportunity to locate axis deer and carefully work into position for an ethical shot.
Axis deer are alert animals with sharp senses, making patience, careful movement, and effective use of available cover important parts of the hunt. Working alongside your guide, you'll experience the challenge of pursuing these beautiful spotted deer through West Texas country.
Hunting Axis Does From a Blind
Hunters who prefer a more stationary approach can pursue axis does from one of the ranch's hunting blinds.
Blind hunting allows you to observe deer movement and wait for the right opportunity. It's an excellent option for hunters who prefer a patient approach, are newer to exotic hunting, or want a less physically demanding experience.
Both hunting styles are professionally guided, giving hunters flexibility in how they experience their axis doe hunt.

Axis Doe hunting questions
- Can axis does be hunted year-round in Texas?
- Yes. Axis deer are classified as exotic animals in Texas and can be hunted year-round on private property. This gives hunters flexibility to plan an axis doe hunt outside traditional deer hunting seasons, subject to ranch availability.
- Do I need a Texas hunting license to hunt axis does?
- Yes. Both Texas residents and nonresidents need a valid Texas hunting license to hunt axis deer. Nonresident hunters may qualify for the Texas five-day special hunting license for exotic game. We recommend reviewing current Texas Parks and Wildlife requirements before your hunt.
- Can I bring family members or non-hunting guests?
- Absolutely! BarBell Ranch welcomes spouses, children, and other non-hunting guests. Overnight accommodations for non-hunters are $150 per night, while children under 12 stay free. Contact us to discuss arrangements for your group.
- Can I rent a rifle for my axis doe hunt?
- Yes. BarBell Ranch has rifles available for rent for hunters who prefer not to travel with their own firearm. Please contact us before your hunt to discuss rental arrangements.
- What should I bring to transport my axis venison home?
- We recommend bringing adequately sized coolers to transport your venison after the hunt. Ice is available at the ranch. If you plan to have your meat professionally processed, we recommend making arrangements before your trip.
- What happens if I don't harvest both axis does?
- Under the BarBell Ranch Promise, if a hunt ends without a harvest or wounded animal, we'll work with you to reschedule at no additional hunt fee. If an animal is wounded or blood is drawn, we'll make every reasonable effort to recover it, but the animal is considered harvested whether recovered or not.
