Bison Hunting in Texas at BarBell Ranch
Few North American big-game animals command the same respect as the American bison. With their massive shoulders, thick coats, curved horns, and unmistakable presence, these animals are icons of the American West. Pursuing a bison is a bucket-list experience for many hunters, offering the opportunity to harvest an impressive animal while bringing home a substantial amount of prized wild game meat.
At BarBell Ranch in Sweetwater, Texas, we offer professionally guided bison hunts that combine the excitement of pursuing one of North America's largest land mammals with the hospitality and experience of a West Texas hunting ranch.
Whether your goal is an impressive bull trophy or a meat-focused hunt, a bison offers something special. With both bulls and cows potentially available depending on current inventory, we'll help you explore your options and plan the hunt that fits your goals.
A True American Big-Game Trophy
Bison are among the most recognizable animals in North America. Their massive front quarters, shaggy manes, distinctive shoulder humps, and short, curved horns create an unmistakable silhouette.
Mature bulls are especially impressive, developing tremendous size, heavy shoulders, and thick coats. Their imposing appearance makes them an exceptional choice for hunters looking for a traditional North American big-game trophy.
Bison cows are also substantial animals and can offer an appealing option for hunters whose primary goal is quality meat.
For hunters who have already pursued whitetail deer, elk, or exotic antelope, a bison hunt offers an opportunity to experience something entirely different.
Our BarBell Ranch gallery even features a father-and-son bison harvest from the ranch in Sweetwater, capturing the kind of hunting memories that last long after the trip is over.
Exceptional Bison Meat for the Freezer
Beyond their impressive appearance, bison are highly valued for their meat.
Bison meat is known for its rich flavor and relatively lean composition, making it an excellent option for hunters looking to stock their freezer with quality protein. From premium steaks and roasts to ground bison, burgers, and sausage, the meat is versatile and highly regarded.
Because bison are considerably larger than most traditional deer and exotic antelope, a successful hunt can provide a substantial quantity of meat. Actual yield will depend on the size and condition of the animal.
Whether you're pursuing a bull or a cow, planning ahead for processing and transportation is an important part of getting the most from your harvest.
Spot-and-Stalk or Blind Bison Hunts
At BarBell Ranch, hunters can choose between professionally guided spot-and-stalk hunting and hunting from a blind.
Spot-and-Stalk Bison Hunting
For hunters who enjoy an active pursuit, spot-and-stalk hunting offers an opportunity to locate a bison and work with your guide to establish a safe, ethical shooting position.
The sheer size and power of these animals make careful planning, appropriate equipment, and precise shot placement particularly important.
Pursuing an American bison on foot can be a memorable experience for hunters who appreciate the challenge of big-game hunting.
Hunting Bison from a Blind
Hunters who prefer a more stationary approach can pursue bison from one of the ranch's hunting blinds.
Blind hunting offers a different pace, allowing hunters to observe the animals and wait for an appropriate opportunity without the physical demands of an active stalk.
Both hunting methods are professionally guided, with an emphasis on safety, ethical hunting, and an enjoyable experience in the field.

Bison hunting questions
- Are both bull and cow bison available to hunt at BarBell Ranch?
- Bull and cow bison may both be available, depending on our current inventory. Contact BarBell Ranch to confirm which animals are currently offered, discuss your hunting goals, and receive pricing for the available options.
- How should I prepare to transport bison meat home?
- Bison are exceptionally large animals, so we recommend arranging meat processing and transportation ahead of your hunt. Plan for significant cooler or freezer capacity depending on the animal selected. Contact us if you need help preparing for the size of your potential harvest.
- What rifle or equipment should I bring for a bison hunt?
- Because bison are large, powerful animals, selecting appropriate hunting equipment is especially important. Contact our guides before your trip to discuss suitable rifle and ammunition choices. BarBell Ranch also has rifles available for rent, subject to advance arrangements.
- Can I bring family members or non-hunting guests on my bison hunt?
- Absolutely! BarBell Ranch welcomes spouses, children, and other non-hunting guests. Non-hunting guests are currently $150 per night, while children under 12 stay free. Contact us to discuss accommodations and arrangements for your group.
- How much is required to reserve a bison hunt?
- A deposit equal to 50% of the total hunt cost is required to reserve your hunting dates. The remaining balance is due before or at the hunt unless other arrangements have been agreed to in writing. We recommend confirming current bison inventory and your final quoted price before making a deposit.
- What happens if I don't harvest a bison during my hunt?
- Under the BarBell Ranch Promise, if your hunt ends without a harvest or wounded animal, we'll work with you to reschedule for a future date at no additional hunt fee. If an animal is wounded or blood is drawn, we'll make every reasonable effort to recover it. Wounded animals are considered harvested and remain the hunter's responsibility whether recovered or not. Contact us for details about future bison availability when rescheduling.
