A Classic Wild Sheep Trophy
Mouflon have a fascinating history, with populations associated with the Mediterranean islands of Corsica, Sardinia, and Cyprus. Their wild sheep heritage, natural wariness, and impressive horns make them particularly appealing to hunters interested in traditional sheep trophies.
One of the most distinctive features of a mature mouflon ram is its horn structure. The horns sweep backward from the head before curving downward and forward, creating a dramatic shape that can approach a full curl.
Mature rams are also known for their striking coloration. Their coats range from reddish-brown to deep chestnut, often with a darker neck and chest, lighter underparts, and a distinctive pale saddle patch along the sides.
The contrast between their dark coats, white markings, and heavy horns creates a beautiful trophy that stands apart from other exotic sheep.
For hunters evaluating a mouflon ram, horn length, mass, curl, symmetry, and overall maturity all contribute to the animal's appeal.
A Challenging and Rewarding Mouflon Hunt
Mouflon are naturally alert sheep with keen eyesight and an impressive ability to detect movement. Their cautious behavior makes them particularly exciting to pursue, especially for hunters who enjoy the challenge of locating an animal and carefully working into shooting position.
Unlike a hunt focused solely on harvesting an animal, pursuing a mature mouflon offers the satisfaction of evaluating different rams, choosing a trophy, and making a thoughtful approach.
At BarBell Ranch, our West Texas landscape provides an inviting setting for this experience, with open country, brush, and varied terrain that can make locating and approaching a ram both challenging and rewarding.
The ranch's gallery features photographs of mouflon living on the property, including a mature ram displaying the characteristic horns and coloration that make these sheep so recognizable.
Spot-and-Stalk or Blind Mouflon Hunts
At BarBell Ranch, hunters can choose between professionally guided spot-and-stalk hunting and hunting from a blind.
Spot-and-Stalk Mouflon Hunting
For hunters who enjoy an active pursuit, spot-and-stalk hunting offers the opportunity to locate a mouflon ram and carefully work into position for an ethical shot.
Working alongside your guide, you'll use binoculars to evaluate animals, assess the wind and surrounding terrain, and plan an approach that takes advantage of available cover.
Mouflon can be difficult to approach when alert, making patience, precise movement, and good positioning important parts of the hunt.
Successfully closing the distance on a mature ram adds to the satisfaction of taking home an impressive trophy.
Hunting Mouflon From a Blind
Hunters who prefer a more stationary approach can pursue mouflon from one of the ranch's hunting blinds.
Blind hunting allows hunters to observe animal movement and wait for a suitable shooting opportunity without the physical demands of an active stalk.
Both hunting methods are professionally guided, allowing you to choose an approach that matches your hunting experience, preferences, and abilities.
